Northeastern University announces a search for a Visiting Assistant Professor (one-year appointment, 2016-2017 academic year) with a background and research interests in music of the African diaspora and other musical traditions around the globe, engaged from a broadly ethnographic and cross-disciplinary perspective.

The visiting faculty member will be asked to teach a load of three classes per semester. In the fall, this might include a course entitled “Music in Popular Culture” and a large course in the history and practice of jazz (with an enrollment of ca. 500), both open to all majors across campus. In the spring, the visiting colleague will have the opportunity to teach a special topics course of his or her own creation, in addition to two courses: “Black Popular Music” and “Global Pop Music.”

The ideal candidate will possess a promising record of, or progress toward, significant achievement in musical scholarship, with an ability to place music in the context of creative practice across an array of disciplines and cultures within and beyond the arts.
