Responsibilities

This position is part of the College of Computer and Information Science (CCIS) Systems Group, a team of five individuals that take great pride in creating and administering the state-of-the-art computing and networking infrastructure crucial to our College’s success. Our College’s infrastructure supports a 2300+ user population including faculty, staff and students. Our computing environment is optimized for the teaching and research needs of the College and as a result we run many of our own core services that must integrate well with the resources provided and supported by Information Technology Services. It is common for us to be in the vanguard of new technology at Northeastern University.

The College is growing with regard to faculty, staff, students and space allocation. We will soon have faculty and staff in four buildings on the Boston Campus and are expanding campuses globally. The System Administrator is responsible for the entire system development life cycle as needed by the College of Computer and Information Science (CCIS) in the design, delivery, and enhancement of research computing services supporting the CCIS Community.

The mission of this job is to provide a permanent resource that will:

•Be responsible for the planning, execution, deployment and support of major research computing projects that require a broader scope of system administration knowledge and expertise. This includes expertise in automation, scaling, security and reliability.
•Be responsible for the monitoring and upgrading of research server infrastructure. He/she specializes in the domain-specific knowledge and challenges associated with Linux computing and network technologies as deployed in an intensive research and teaching computing environment.
•Collaborate directly with CCIS faculty and research groups to manage current and future research computing needs.
•Specialize in the domain-specific knowledge and challenges associated with the computing and network technologies as deployed in research computing, with a primary focus on auditing and enforcing security compliance.
•Be responsible for the development, administration and constant reinvention of a sophisticated Linux-based computing/networking infrastructure focused on research computing initiatives.
•Hold primary responsibility (planning, executing, documenting, and automating) for research computing services provided.

Candidate must have proven problem solving skills and technical skills, a “can do” attitude and the ability to work through challenging situations. Must show demonstrated initiative to research new technologies and have the ability to interact with customers. Demonstrated continued professional growth and development. Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work on multiple concurrent projects and activities as both a lead and team member.

Qualifications

Advanced knowledge/experience in Linux-related technologies, general system administration knowledge and experience, general computer security knowledge, programming skills related to system administration automation, excellent communication skills (for user support), architectural thinking and professional planning. Minimum of 3-5 years of experience with Linux systems administration (server and desktop) in medium to large computing infrastructures, preferably with experience in a research-intensive environment. Bachelor’s degree in technology related field or equivalent experience and certification is required. Experience and knowledge in administration of current research computing trends in the following domains: Parallel and High Performance Computing, Big Data applications, et al.

Preferred qualifications:
-Advanced knowledge/experience in Linux-related technologies, system administration knowledge and experience (including virtualization and IaaS technologies like AWS, OpenStack, etc.)
-Skills related to system administration automation and configuration management (e.g. Puppet, Ruby, Python)
-Excellent communication skills (for user support), architectural thinking and professional planning.
-Able to assess the code of others and write in BASH, Perl and C. Experience in other languages is a plus: Ruby, Python, C++, Java etc.
-Expertise in version control tools like Git, SVN, etc.
-Strong knowledge of computer system authentication, authorization and accounting. Experience with LDAP, PAM, AD, Kerberos, RADIUS, and SAMBA.
-Storage management (especially NetApp/Nimble administration)
-Experience with computer security, programming skills related to system administration automation and configuration management (e.g. Puppet, Ruby, Python)
-Excellent communication skills (for user support), architectural thinking and professional planning.
-Familiarity with OSX, Windows a plus. Experience with current Cisco hardware a plus.
-Participation in the DevOps culture and familiarity with the toolset and approaches (e.g. Infrastructure as Code) a strong plus.
-Experience in a research-intensive environment a strong plus.
