The Research Institute for Experiential Learning (RIELS) will be dedicated to leading the investigation of the power of Experiential Learning, with a focus on the intersection of the contexts and environments in which students learn, how that learning manifests, and the impact that that learning has on those very environments in which it is occurring. In pursuit of this goal, RIELS will utilize a myriad of research methodologies to engage in research itself while also partnering with key stakeholders to foster research at Northeastern and beyond.
To bring this vision to reality, Northeastern University is seeking a founding Director to work closely with the Assistant Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning to establish RIELS and to direct all operational functions at the Institute. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• In collaboration with the Assistant Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, establish and pursue the Institute’s research mission, objectives, agenda and priorities
• Design and implement novel research utilizing diverse methodologies to investigate the impact experiential learning (e.g. cooperative education, international academic opportunities, and service-learning) in post-secondary environments
• Develop and/or identify innovative ways to distribute the knowledge gained through the work of the Institute to key stakeholders at the university and beyond and in doing so, advocate for experiential learning science
• Together with the Assistant Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, create intra- and inter-institutional relationships that will promote the mission of the Institute

• Regularly interact with related units within and beyond the Office of the Provost, including the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research, Institutional Research and Data Administration, Scholars, Honors, Cooperative Education and Career Development, and Integrated Student Learning Experience
• Collaborate with the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research to ensure that theory from the Institute informs the Center’s practice and vice versa
• Collaborate with the Director of the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research and the Executive Director of the Integrated Student Learning Experience Initiative to identify and engage in research collaborations
• Foster and develop research opportunities with constituents such as faculty, employers, co-op coordinators, career services, employers, alumni, administrators, and various centers around the university to crowd-source research
• Create and maintain relationships with individuals, academic departments, and administrative offices across the University and beyond to engage in collaborative research efforts that align with the mission of RIELS
• Collaborate with various stakeholders to identify and obtain external funding to advance the Institute’s work

• Develop internal and external programming including, but not limited to, workshops, conferences, and institutes to bring together and/or foster research investigating the impact of experiential learning
• Work together with the Director of the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research and the Executive Director of the Integrated Student Learning Experience Initiative to develop programming for faculty and educators around the impact of experiential learning
• Develop programming to provide expert assistance to faculty and staff on issues related to experiential learning, research design, and the dissemination of research findings

• Supervise a team of researchers
• Be a key agent to advocate the work of the Institute
• Manage the Institute’s fiscal and human resources


Qualifications for this position include:
• Doctoral degree in a field closely aligned with learning, preferably in the area of experiential learning
• At least four (4) years of experience managing budgets and supervising staff in a research center, consulting agency, and/or academic organization
• Demonstrated experience leading centers, organizations, or teams with clear outcomes
• Demonstrated ability to establish and pursue a successful research agenda
• Demonstrated successful collaboration with others leading other centers, organization or teams with clear outcomes
• Demonstrated Experience with multiple research methodologies, including qualitative and quantitative research design
• Experience with data management and analysis
• A history of successful publication and presentation of research findings in peer-review journals and national and/or international academic conferences
• Strong communication skills with the ability to write, speak, and present effectively to a wide variety of audiences including executives
• Demonstrated leadership and managerial skills, with the ability to use sound judgment to make decisions and resolve problems diplomatically
• Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to plan and successfully execute multiple projects with conflicting priorities and concurrent deadlines in a dynamic environment
• Ability to forge collaborative relationships with peers and to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders at various organizational levels
