Research Finance is responsible for the fiscal management of grants and contracts in accordance with government regulations, donor requirements, and University policy. RF establishes new grants and analyzes and processes financial data within the Banner general ledger. The expectation from Northeastern by our research sponsors is to support increased regulation and compliance requirements. Research Finance is committed to providing excellence in Financial Compliance oversight and management

The role of the Compliance Specialist will be largely transactional. Reporting to the Director, Research Finance, the Compliance Specialist will monitor and review all cost documents for compliance within the regulatory framework established for the University and its components. This will include, but not be limited to, purchase orders, subrecipient invoices, vendor invoices, DPAYs, travel expenses, and journal vouchers.

Associated duties include developing and delivering compliance training and education programs; preparing scheduled reports; providing identified and required data; maintaining data in compliance-specific sections of RF databases and keeping abreast of developing and enacted regulation in the Federal Register and advising RF management in order to ensure monitoring processes are developed.


Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Management, or related field required. MBA or other related master’s degree preferred. Three to five years of experience working within a university business office OR with federal and non-federal grants and contracts in a post-award requirement is required. Working knowledge of major grant administration policies, Federal Regulations (specifically Uniform Guidance and FAR), National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health grant policies required. Familiarity/experience with other federal funding agencies (ONR, NASA, DOE, etc), Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and major foundations desired is recommended.

Must be able to manage multiple tasks and have flexibility to adjust to changing priorities. Must have the ability to work effectively under deadline pressures/ time constraints. Must be committed to providing professional, prompt, and courteous service to assigned PIs and departments. Must be able to work effectively in a team oriented environment.

Other Skills: Strong communications skills are necessary to interface with pre-award and other sponsored administration colleagues across the University, as well as with external sponsors and collaborators. In addition, the Compliance Specialist will have a strong command of systems and will use them to enable accurate reporting and ensure data integrity. In addition, organizational, critical thinking and decision making skills are highly recommended.
