Responsibilities

The Department of Cultures, Societies and Global Studies and the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at Northeastern University seek nominations and applications from leading scholars for the position of Director of the African American Studies Program, with an expected start date of Fall 2018. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure. The successful candidate will have a distinguished scholarly record and demonstrated potential for excellence in leadership. We are looking for candidates whose work bridges disciplinary, geographic, and cultural divisions in the historic and contemporary African Diaspora as well as in the African American experience understood in a hemispheric and transnational context. The candidate’s fields of expertise should be anchored in the Humanities or Social Sciences although joint appointments with other fields are possible. The African American Studies program crosses departmental and college boundaries, and the director of African American Studies reports to the Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities.
The director will support the University’s commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary research and teaching as well as the department’s vision of the transformative power of culture as an instrument for social change and innovation. Candidates should have demonstrated commitment to fostering diverse and inclusive environments as well as to promoting experiential learning, which are central to a Northeastern University education. The Department has 13 tenured and tenure-track faculty members and 19 affiliated faculty members. Several faculty members hold joint appointments in other academic units including the English Department, the Gender Studies program, the History Department, the International Affairs program, the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs. The Department of Cultures, Societies and Global Studies includes majors and minors in African Studies, African American Studies, American Sign Language, Asian Studies, Film and International Cultures, Latino, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Spanish and several combined majors. The Department supports seven student organizations and many faculty-led study abroad programs.

Qualifications

A PhD or its equivalent is required. A joint appointment within an appropriate department in or beyond the College is possible.
