Provide professional administrative support to Department Chair and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology, including overseeing the daily operations of the department (and particularly its graduate programs). Serve as a primary contact for faculty and graduate students in the unit, and be a consistent presence in the front office. Handle scheduling of key committee meetings. Support department’s graduate programs and the Committee on Graduate Studies (COGS). Correspond and interact with prospective MA and PhD students and currently-enrolled students and help organize and review applications to MA and PhD programs. Offer administrative and interpersonal support to students at various stages of the program from those just arriving to those navigating the academic job market. This includes providing advice on course registration and information on program requirements (e.g., comprehensive exams), funding, teaching assignments, commencement, and student benefits. Provide administrative support for the Graduate Sociology Society. Prepare information for monthly COGS meetings, assist with determination and management of TA-assignments, manage correspondence and protocols for curriculum changes, help Graduate Program Director with construction of schedule of graduate courses, help organize and manage open-house for admitted PhD students, help organize the annual progress reviews of graduate students, and help organize and administer summer (graduate student) grant program.


Bachelor’s degree required and responsible administrative experience of 2-3 years preferred. Strong computer skills required in word processing, database management, spreadsheets, website maintenance, and electronic correspondence. Organizational and interpersonal skills critical; independence and initiative essential. Familiarity with university administration and student services a plus.
