Responsibilities

Reporting to the Dean of Global Services and working in close collaboration with leadership team members of the Associate Dean, Student Affairs, the Director of the International Student Support and Programs provides collaborative leadership, oversight and vision to the development of innovative student support and programming initiatives in OGS.

The Director serves as the primary liaison between the Office of Global Services and Student Affairs Offices, Academic Advising Services, Admissions, the Graduate Schools, College of Professional Studies and the International Advancement office. The Director leads the Student Support & Programming team in supporting students from initial inquiry through graduation to ensure the highest level of service and retention. The Director develops and refines processes for conflict resolution, problem solving – particularly when multiple departments are involved – and serves as the primary contact for identified international populations throughout their academic program.

Partnering and working jointly with the Director of Student Orientation & Parent/Family Programs, the director co-designs and leads the implementation of international student orientation and cross-cultural programs to ensure the successful transition and retention of international undergraduate, graduate students, scholars and Pathway students. Exercising networked leadership, the Director works with the directors of the Center for Spirituality, Dialogue and Service (CSDS), OIDI, and the Associate Dean for Cultural, Residential and Spiritual Life, to collectively design programs and execute projects that deepen dialogue opportunities between US and international students around global issues. The Director supervises international student program initiatives such as International Education Week (IEW) and Carnevale — a signature month of events showcasing Northeastern’s international mosaic. The Director collaborates with college/school administrations, faculty, and staff in providing event-planning directions to ensure intercultural training to university offices and departments, advisement and student organizations, whose mission and programming are focused on international cultures. Furthermore, this position will continue to develop and strengthen programming partnerships with campus units such as Center for Student Involvement, the Cultural Centers, the Global Experience Office, Co-op Connections, Graduate Schools, and International Co-op Programs to coordinate and enhance international students’ support and experience with a goal of improving the international student engagement and retention. The Director will actively assess programming initiatives and events for meeting learning objectives and measurable improvement in retention.

The Director and the student support and programming staff manage relationships with international students and their families who would benefit from coordinated staff support. The Director will be an advocate for international students and scholars across the university and assist in the development and implementation of strategies and infrastructure to support international student and scholar integration, in collaboration with the colleges and Student Affairs. The Director works within and across relevant University and college committees to address and ensure support for international student and scholar needs, including patterns of academic and/or emotional difficulty; behavioral difficulties; or cultural skill development. Apprise and advise University officials on areas of need.
The Director participates in high-level strategy and implementation meetings and other internal and external teams as required and assigned. The Director counsels and advises students, families and various university constituencies, by phone, in person, electronically, and through social media. The Director will also advise international students in non-immigrant status on issues of compliance with United States Immigration and Naturalization Service regulations, and on topics relating to personal, academic, financial, health, legal, developmental, and cross-cultural issues. Qualifications

• Master’s degree required with 8-10 years of experience working within a higher education context preferably in student affairs with a focus of international student services.
• Significant experience living and working abroad and working with international students and families outside of the U.S.
• Strong cross-cultural, presentation, process management, organization, short-term and long-range planning, communication, analytic and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to set priorities are required.
• The successful candidate will be a team player with a strong work ethic who actively contributes to the office welfare in a high volume, fast-paced environment.
• Demonstrated and sustained international engagement and the ability to work with a multicultural and international clientele
• A track record of success coordinating and leading aspects of language and cultural programs in a complex university environment, or, alternatively, leadership experience gained in another service-oriented role requiring coordination and strategic leadership of a diverse range of stakeholders;
• A history of evidence based interventions and programming with assessment results evidencing retention and academic success of international students
• The ability to think strategically and develop a shared vision;
• An understanding of how to build productive relationships with administrative leaders and faculty members across multiple organizational elements and academic disciplines within a university
