Responsibilities

The Ocean Genome Legacy, located within the Northeastern University Marine Science Center (www.northeastern.edu/ogl) seeks a Research Technician to assist in daily operations of the biorepository under the supervision of the Collections Manager. This position will include the following tasks:

DNA extraction, handling, and storage
DNA quantitation and quality analysis using gel electrophoresis, spectrophotometry, and fluorometry
PCR and qPCR amplification
• Basic DNA sequence analyses (e.g. editing, alignment, gene identification and annotation)
• Preparation of chemical stock solutions
• Laboratory safety management
• Preparation of sample collection kits and sample distributions
• Training and supervision of interns
• Laboratory equipment maintenance
• Data entry, laboratory information/data management
• Purchasing and receiving of laboratory equipment and supplies

The position is available starting in January 2018 and offers exciting opportunities for broad training, competitive salary, and benefits within an academically oriented non-profit research laboratory. Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or a related field is required and at least one year of relevant work experience is strongly preferred. The successful candidate will have experience in and general knowledge of basic molecular biology and microbiology techniques (e.g., DNA extraction and handling, gel electrophoresis, PCR amplification, sterile technique, environmental health and safety, data management and documentation, etc.). Also necessary are excellent organizational, communication, and laboratory skills with strong attention to detail and the desire and ability to work well in a collaborative, small group setting. The successful candidate will also have reliable transportation to Nahant, which has limited access to public transportation.

This appointment is funded by an award received from an outside source. The duration of this position is contingent upon the continued availability of funding from this award at its current financial level.
