This position supports the communications efforts for a new major university-wide initiative currently underway at Northeastern University. The Student Assessed Integrated Learning initiative—known as SAIL—is an effort led by the Provost’s Office for Undergraduate Education and Experiential Learning. SAIL’s mission is to transform Northeastern’s experiential learning model through the development and integration of a learning framework, shared language, and innovative set of digital tools across the university.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Communications, the Digital Communications Specialist role supports the day-to-day management of the SAIL digital communication efforts across a variety of channels, including the website, e-newsletters, and social media. The Digital Communications Specialist develops a wide variety of written and visual content for SAIL’s digital platforms, aligning with the university’s brand, as well as SAIL’s vision and content strategy. S/he acts as a “brand journalist” for SAIL, seeking and creating compelling narratives and content that drive awareness of the initiative, measurable engagement, and conversion.

Creativity, flexibility, and excellent problem-solving and strategic thinking skills are necessary, as well as the ability to work in a highly collaborative team environment. Passion and enthusiasm for education and innovation highly desirable.


• 2-5 years of relevant experience in communications, preferably in an education or non-profit setting
• Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in communications, marketing, journalism, or other related field
• Knowledge of Google Analytics, content management systems such as Wordpress, Adobe Creative Suite, photography/video, graphic design
• Demonstrable experience in social media management, content creation/curation platforms, web design, etc.
• Demonstrated ability to develop “story ideas” for multiple audiences across varied media
• Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
• Excellent editing, interviewing, and oral presentation skills
