Reporting to the Associate Director of OGS Employment Services in the Office of Global Services (OGS), the International Student & Scholar Advisor will act in the capacity of Designated School Official (DSO) for all Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Curricular Practical Training (CPT) related concerns. They will also serve as a primary resource to international students for issues related to legal requirements concerning Optional Practical Training, Curricular Practical Training, and STEM OPT extension and Cap Gap procedures. The International Student & Scholar Advisor will manage the processes, data collection, and informational components as required by SEVIS and will keep abreast of federal regulations governing all aspects of OPT, CPT, STEM Extension, and Cap Gap. The International Student & Scholar Advisor will work in tandem with Colleges and Graduate Schools as needed. This role will also provide outreach to alumni addressing unique issues of concern to this constituency including dissemination of information on SEVIS responsibilities mandated of students on OPT and support to students in complying with federal regulations as demanded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The International Student & Scholar Advisor will serve as part of the OGS team in ensuring university compliance with federal regulations. This role will train and work collaborately across teams to develop and support student and scholar orientated program and services and work with Career Services for the development of seminars/workshops designed to address the needs of international students.


A minimum of 3 years of formal work experience in immigration advising and compliance is required. Knowledge of SEVIS RTI procedures is essential. Familiarity with batching systems highly preferred. A Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in a field related to international education, social sciences, or humanities. A Master’s degree is strongly preferred. Prior study/work abroad or other living experience overseas is helpful, along with knowledge of a second or third language. Strong intercultural communication and interpersonal skills, highly developed organizational abilities and systems management experience crucial, along with the capability to work well with students, OGS team, and other university departments. US citizenship or permanent residency required.
